The international climbing competition season finally got underway yesterday with the first stage of the Bouldering World Cup 2018 at Meiringen Switzerland. Anticipation had reached fever pitch as the athletes were keen to check their form after the long winter break. A staggering 99 female athletes and 109 male athletes competed in the marathon qualifiers that paved the way for the best 20 + 20 to this morning’s Semi-Finals that begin at 11 and then, at 18:30, the Finals. Both will be streamed live.

It's worth highlighting the immediate domination of Serbia's Stasa Gejo, reigning European Champion and the only athlete to send all five porblems, all flash as it happens. And it's worth noting that sending all five blocs didn't suffice for many male athletes in group 2, where the route setting was simply too easy meaning that greats such as Keita Watabe, Gabriele Moroni and Alexander Megos failed to qualify.
