"The brain is the most important muscle for climbing” Of course it’s not us who made this famous statement, but one of the greatest sport climbers of all times, Wolfgang Güllich. The German climber understood early on in his illustrious career the importance the mental aspect in climbing, regardless of the terrain, whether it be trad routes, sport climbs or even competitions.

Perhaps inspired by this the talented Frenchman Romain Desgranges recently decided to drive out "my demons that hinder my climb atop the podium”. This challenge led him to America’s Joshua Tree to climb some amazing highballs, some beautiful boulder problems that up to 12m high. There is no room for doubt up here, the only thing that must reign supreme is command of both the body and the mind because, unlike in competitions, falling is simply not an option.

For the record, in 2013 Desgranges won the European Championship in Chamonix and on 12 July 12 in the same French town he will try to defend his title.
