New multi-pitch rock climb in Fischleintal, Dolomites

This summer in Fischleintal, just a stone’s throw from the famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the South Tyrolean alpinists Markus Tschurtschenthaler and Hannes Pfeifhofer, and Lisi Steurer from Austria’s East Tyrol made the first ascent of Weg der Neugier, a new 500m alpine sports climb up Einserkofel in the Italian Dolomites.

Weg der Neugier was established ground-up with bolts past difficulties estimated at IX-. The new route takes a line immediately to the left of Gedankenreise (VIII+), established in 2014 by Pfeifhofer and Tschurtschenthaler and dedicated to the late Talschlusshütte hut warden Herbert Villgrater.

According to the first ascentionists, both routes are highly recommended, in particular on hot summer days seeing that they face north. The descent involves a grade (I+II) scramble to reach an exposed path that requires great care. The face remains wet after extended periods of rain.

Tschurtschenthaler, Pfeifhofer and Steurer are members of the local Gamazn mountaineering club that, from 18 - 20 September, has organised the third Dolorock Climbing Festival. Highlight of the event will be tomorrow evening’s meeting at Toblach entitled "Bolts, no bolts or only some? The future of classic and modern rock climbs in the Dolomites."
