Almost precisely a year ago, on 28 October 2012, Kiwi climber Mayan Smith-Gobat succeeded in the first female ascent of Punks in the Gym (32/8b+), the route envisaged by Swissman Martin Scheel and then freed by Wolfgang Güllich in 1985 at Arapiles in Australia. To repeat the route Smith-Gobat had to find a new sequence that avoided the leftwards traverse and reachy boulder crux, and instead climbs directly up past a series of terrible crimps. It'll certainly be interesting to see if this variation becomes the norm in the future...
