Matteo Gambaro climbs Abysse 9a at the Gorges du Loup
On 12/09/2012 the Gorges du Loup in France Matteo Gambaro has climbed his first 9a, Abyss.

37-year-old Matteo Gambaro climbing Abyss 9a at the Gorges du Loup, France.
Matteo Gambaro, one of Italy's strongest and (perhaps) least known climbers, has managed to repeat Abysse, the famous 9a located at the Gorges du Loup in France first ascended by Alexandre Chabot in 2006. Germany's Andreas Bindhammer repeated the line that same year and after his ascent he described the route to planetmountain as follows: "Abysse is a route without compromises: it has no rest whatsoever throughout all it's 40 moves... a total challenge."
Gambaro set his sights on Abysse last year but he was hampered by impossible route conditions. After breaking a foothold and an intermediate hold the climber from Cuneo came up trumps yesterday and this is now his first, full-blown 9a after his first ascent of Azione Diretta 8c+/9a at Piatta di Montemale in 2009. Gambaro now joins the select club of Italians capable of climbing 9a. At 37 years of age... Congratulations!
