Croda di Pomagagnon collapse in the Dolomites

Almost a year to date since the collapse of the Trephor at the Cinque Torri, yesterday at 15.37 a similar phenomenon occured at Cortina d'Ampezzo. A large quantity of rock broke free from the central wall of Monte Pomagagnon, creating an enormous cloud of dust. The spectacle was clearly visible from nearby Cortina.

Part of the debris fell into the base of the gully which descends from Forcella Pomagagnon. This scree slope is often used by walkers and climbers to return back down into valley after having reached Punta Fiames.

The section of the rockface which detached yesterday afternoon was called Croda di Pomagagnon, and hosted the "Via Direttissima," first ascended by local Scoiattoli Luigi Ghedina, Armando Apollonio and Luigi Menardi (500 m. V1. 22 hours, 62 pegs). Two ledges split the face, ledge IV (unsafe and previously unused) and ledge V. This may have been damaged and it is therfore recommended to steer clear of it. Ledge III was not involved in the collapse.
