A new posthumous collection of Anatoli Boukreev’s writings entitled “Above the clouds - The Diaries of a High-Altitude Mountaineer” has recently been published.

The great Russian mountaineer, author of the best-selling “The Climb – Tragic ambitions on Everest” lost his life in 1997 on Annapurna together with his companion Dimitri Sobolev. With the two at the time was the Italian Simone Moro, but he miraculously survived.

Moro explains “Anatoli’s diary about his most important Himalayan ascents have been translated well, reconstructing his life as man and mountaineer. This project wasn’t carried out purely for commercial reasons and the book shows this. He had passed on his writings to his American partner Linda Wylie saying that one day…” Linda Wylie kept her word and has now published this autobiographical collection.

Boukreev was without a doubt an incredibly talented mountaineer. He had climbed eleven 8000m peaks and had been successful on many other expeditions worldwide. Boukreev, in the role of professional guide, was one of the protagonists of the 1996 Everest tragedy, rendered world-famous by Jon Krakauer’s “Into Thin Air”. In response to the polemics that surrounded the tragedy, Boukreev published his version in the above-mentioned “The Climb – Tragic ambitions on Everest”. Boukreev had carried out an extraordinary solitary night rescue of three client alpinists lost on the South Col.
