In January 2017 a mysterious, extraordinary icefall was climbed for the first time deep within China. The photos of the undertaking made the headline news of mainstream media worldwide because the waterfall in its frozen state resembled a huge, beautiful Christmas tree.

Located in the Xianxia canyon, a branch of the Linzhou Taihang canyon, the icefall was first ascended by He Chuan and Liu Yang and dubbed Merry Christmas. This is the intriguing story of Chuan's quest to locate the whereabouts of the unknown frozen waterfall, which he later told planetmountain.com was "the most beautiful ice climb I know and the most fun climb I’ve ever done."
