Re Leone above the village of Timau was developed by Alessandro Balestra and Alessandro Zeni in 2024 and provides fantastic rock, in a location with a breathtaking view far from the crowds. The crag is silent and ideal for those who love technical and demanding climbing, where every pitch, whatever its grade, is never easy.

Access

25/30 minutes approach from the village of Timau. Follow the steep mule track that climbs from the village towards Malga Pramosio until you intersect a large rockfall barrier. Bypass this on the left and then continue for about 250m on a steep mule track until a fork. Turn off the main path, following a less faint trail on the left that climbs upwards past a few hairpin bends. After about 200m, where the path curves to the right, there's a trail on the left (marked with a cairn). Take the trail that leads through a beautiful forest of centuries-old beech trees ("bosco bandito") and, now less steep, head to the base of the obvious overhanging corner to the left of the crag (cairns). From here, go diagonally right for another 300m uphill, following the walls to reach the base of the crag. See map

Period

Winter and mid-seasons if cloudy (summer to be avoided due to excessive heat). In winter, the sun arrives from 9:00 and remains until approximately 15:30.

Climb

The crag is mostly vertical, offering rather technical and demanding climbing. Good finger strength and proficient footwork are also required. Where the wall becomes steeper, one can also enjoy more athletic and sustained climbing.

Notes

The rock is truly exceptional limestone, personally among the best I have ever climbed on; in some sections particularly rough, in others it's smoother. It's worth noting that even after very long periods of rain, the wall remains almost dry except for some seepage on the routes on the right.

NB: Use of the crag remains under the complete responsibility of the climber! The Re Leone crag is dedicated to a very, very special child named Stefano.

Gear

For the pitches Mufasa and Hakuna Matata, 20 and 17 quickdraws are required respectively. For the other routes, 15 quickdraws are sufficient. Pitches up to 40 meters, but almost all are over 30 meters (an 80m rope is advisable).
