On 23 May the Frenchman Marco Siffredi, snowboarded down the Norton Couloir on the 8850m North Face of Everest, 8850m

The Frenchman Marco Siffredi, a specialist in extreme snowboard descents throughout the Alps and even in the Himalaya (Cho Oyu 8201m last year), has snowboarded down the Norton Couloir on the North Face of Everest, 8850m. According to information we received Siffredi used oxygen from 7900m to the highest camp at 8300m. After a short rest he departed for the summit at 1.00am, which he reached at 6.00am on 23 May.

Siffredi spent an hour on the summit without oxygen before beginning his descent. He expected to encounter rocks and have to abseil down the initial section of the Couloir, but managed to snowboard past the greatest difficulties. At 8600m he was forced to fix his binding, but he soon continued and reached Advanced Base Camp at the North Col without further problems in just 2 hours 20 minutes. Siffredi’s descent is the first complete snowboard descent down the highest mountain in the world!
