Ascending Rhythm, the rhythm of climbing according to Ron Kauk and Sterling Johnson

13.07.2012 by Planetmountain

Ascending Rhythm, two video clips by Sterling Johnson and Ron Kauk about climbing as an interior journey into nature, set in the fantastic Yosemite Valley.

It is quite possible that the rhythm of climbing follows the seasons of life and time. But perhaps this rhythm is also something which every one of us holds deep within ourselves. Every rhythm accompanies its own beauty, just like every (climbing) place expresses its own music. Both lie in wait to be interpreted. And so, with an eye to the recent events in Yosemite Valley, we feel its normal to now present a different vision. In this case a vision marked by a rhythm which is a lot less "speed", but not for this any less fascinating.

The two videos below, produced by award-winning American director and filmmaker Sterling Johnson, present a journey. And, perhaps due to chance, this travel into Yosemite's climbing and nature is interpreted by Ron Kauk. The climber who together with Jim Bridwell, John Long, Kevin Worral, Mike Graham and John Bachar established the legendary Astroman rock climb up Washington Column. The same climber who established Midnight Lightning, the boulder problem at Camp 4 which marked an era. And the climber who first breached the vertiginous Separate Reality, the crack of all cracks. In short, a man who has become a symbol of rock climbing in Yosemite (and more) about whom we plan on finding our more in the future.

In the meantime we recommend watching this "Ascending Rhythm". Two clips worth viewing one after the other, without missing the final, accompanied by Ron Kauk's inspiration: "We recognize that all things move in cycles or rhythms. We discover and rediscover ourselves and the environment around us. The journey... to stay open-minded to the rhythm of every step. To share ideas and dreams is what we're all about..."
