Ice Climbing World Cup 2011: Park Hee Yong and Anna Gallyamova reign supreme

The fourth and final stage of the Ice Climbing World Cup 2011 drew to a close in Kirov, Russia on 8 March and was won by the Russians Maxim Tomilov and Anna Gallyamova. The Russians Maria Tolokonina and Pavel Gulayev were crowned Speed World Champions, while the winners of the Lead World Cup 2011 are Park Hee Yong (KOR) and Anna Gallyamova, and winners of the Speed World Cup 2011 are Maria Tolokonina (RUS) and Pavel Batushev (RUS).
Maxim Tomilov and Anna Gallyamova clenched victory in Kirov last Tuesday, beating a immense field of athletes predominantly from the east. The two Russians made the most of their home advantage in the final stage of the Ice Climbing World Cup 2011 – after Korea, Switzerland and Romania - and as usual the last leg proved decisive for the overall 2011 victory which went to Gallyamova and reigning Lead World Champion Park Hee Yong from Korea.

Prior to Kirov the race for 2011 Cup victory was still wide open with a number of contenders in with a running chance, in particular in the men's event where Tomilov started with 200 points, Yong with 245 and Bendler with 280. However, the final stage proved fatal above all for the Austrian and much to everyone's surprise the winner of World Cups 2010 and 2009 was stopped by a move low down in the Semifinal. After an impressive two victories and one 2nd place this season, Bendler's slip to 17th cost him dearly and in failing to qualify for the final he eventually settled down to what must be a disappointing third overall in 2011.

Tomilov won the Kirov stage thanks to the groundwork he made in the Semi-Final - his lone top would prove fundamental - but Yong held his nerve and in reaching the same height as Tomilov in the Final he not only placed 2nd in Kirov, he also clinched overall victory after a blazing march which saw him 2nd in Cheongsong, 3rd in Saas Fee, 1st in Busteni and 2nd in Kirov.

Much like the men's event, Gallyamova's success in the women's event was made somewhat easier by another surprise exclusion, this time in the form of reigning World Champion Angelika Rainer who failed to qualify for the final and slipped to 18th overall. Gallyamova seized her chance, like in Saas Fee a few weeks back, to win the event ahead of Lucie Hrozova from the Czech Republic and above all Maria Tolokonina (RUS) and Seon Shin Woon from Korea who had both topped out in the qualifiers and the Semi-final. Gallymova climbed a full meter higher than the rest of the field to crown her best season to date, while Hrozova placed second in both Kirov and the World Cup.

Kirov also hosted the Speed Climbing event and this also acted as the Speed World Championship 2011. This was won by Pavel Gulayev from Russia and his teammate Maria Tolokonina, meaning that overall 2011 cup victory went to Tolokonina and Pavel Batushev (RUS).
