Lofoten climbing meeting by Norwegian Alpine Club

At the start of March the Norwegian Alpine Club (Norsk Tindeklub, NTK) hosted an international climbing meeting on the remote Lofoten islands. 40 climbers from 15 different nations attended the event designed to raise awareness of the climbing potential on the islands and to highlight the importance of Norway's immense climbing wilderness.

Graced with excellent conditions throughout the week, the mountaineers from as far afied as South Africa and the USA bagged 60 routes, of which circa 30 are believed to be first ascents, all climbed using trad gear only. Topos and guidebooks to the area are practically non-existant and as the NTK explains "You never really knew what you were striving for as you marched through the snow towards that dream-line of yours. Had it been climbed before, was it an old classic, or an untouched gem? As those questions wandered through the heads of our visiting climbers, the awareness of that this region is a fragile part of Europe's last, still nearly unspoiled, wilderness grew. We in Norsk Tindeklub work hard at keeping the "climbing wilderness" of Norway as "wild" and clean as possible. Please help us in our ambitions."

In keeping with the spirit of the meeting no detailed route information has been published as yet. Check out the official Norwegian Alpin Club website for future reference.
