A difficult semi-final men marked the first stage of the Bouldering World Cup, held last weekend at Toronto in Canada. This delicate stage of the competition eliminated many famous climbers including Guillaume Glairon Mondet, Sean McColl, Jakob Schubert, Jerney Kruder, Domen Skofic and Stefan Scarpieri.

The result of this shake-up is that relatively unknown faces made their appearance in the Finals and in the end the wind of change rewarded 21-year-old Alban Levier. Sending three boulders in six attempts, the Frenchman beat America’s Nathaniel Coleman by a mere three attempts, while 'veteran' Adam Ondra completed the podium with two boulder in three attempts. Japan’s Fuji Kokoro, France’s Manuel Corun, Korea’s Jongwon Chon and France’s Jeremy Bonder completed the ranking.

In the women's field the competition proved more regular, with Anna Stöhr, Akiyo Noguchi, Julia Wurm and Alex Puccio immediately laying their cards on the table: this fearsome quartet will certainly set the pace this season. In both the semis and the finals these athletes were separated by a hair’s breadth, and in the end Austria’s Stöhr got the better of Japan’s Noguchi and Germany’s Wurm. Puccio only just missed out on the podium, and was followed by Austria’s Katharina Saurwein and France’s Melissa Le Neve.

After this Canadian prelude the Bouldering World Cup now travels to Vail, USA. The second leg on the North American continent takes place on 5 - 6 June 2015.
