Exhausted, Renan Ozturk contemplates the long descent of the Shark's Fin of Meru in the Indian Garhwal Himalaya after making the summit. The reaching the top is only half of the climb.

Voting for the National Geographic Adventurer of the Year 2013 is now online and in the prestigious list of ten there are - understandably - some of the most extraordinary athletes and adventurers of their respective categories. These include England's Lizzy Hawker (5 Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc victories), Austrian BASE jumper Felix Baumgartner (the first to jump from 39km above the earth) and American snowboarder Jeremy Jones. It's great to see that three ace alpinists have been nominated, too: tireless American Mike Libecki, his compatriot Renan Ozturk (who ascended Meru this year with Conrad Anker and Jimmy Chin), and Austria's David Lama who's in the running thanks above all to his first free ascent of the Cerro Torre Compressor route last January.

Voting remains open until 16 January 2013 (it is possible to vote once a day) and last year the almost 72000 votes cast awarded Lakpa Tsheri Sherpa and Sano Babu Sunuwar for their ascent of Mount Everest, the paraglider flight off the summit and kayak paddle all the way from Nepal to the Bay of Bengal.
