Bouldering World Cup 2011 won by Kilian Fischhuber and Anna Stöhr
The final stage of the Bouldering World Cup 2011 took place in Munich, Germanuy last weekend and was won by Mina Markovic and Dmitry Sharafutdinov. Kilian Fischhuber and Anna Stöhr won the overall World Cup 2011.
Munich hosted the the final stage of the Bouldering World Cup 2011 last Friday and Saturday and after the pause for the World Championship in Arco - won by Dmitry Sharafutdinov from Russia and Anna Stöhr from Austria - the ultimate leg was won by Sharafutdinov and Mina Markovic from Slovenia.
Sharafutdinov and Markovic won in front of a 5000 strong crowd and obviously eyes were focussed not only on this stage but also overall 2011 victory. While Fischhuber had won his record-breaking 5th title one comp in advance, the women's event went down to the wire, with Anna Stöhr battling for supremacy against 2009 and 2010 winner Akiyo Noguchi from Japan.
Prior to Munich the two were separated by a mere 5 points and both qualified for the highly anticipated final (Stöhr provisional 1st, Noguchi 4th) and in the end Stöhr dealt with the pressure better and finished 3rd behind Mina Markovic and Juliane Wurm, while Noguchi ceded ground to Shauna Coxsey and Yana Cheresneva and finished 6th. This "slip" cost her dearly as the World Cup 2011 now returns to Austria, just like in 2008 but with an important difference: this season Stöhr won both the World Championship and the World Cup and her domination is therefore absolute.
Talking of domination: in the men's event the Russians put on a glaring dispaly of raw power with Dmitry Sharafutdinov unbeatable (he flashed all four final problems) ahead of Rustam Gelmanov and Alexey Rubtsov. Klemen Becan finished 4th, Mykhaylo Shalagin 5th and Kilian Fischhuber - understandably relaxed - nevertheless qualified for his nth final and finished 6th.
The curtain now falls on this long 2011 season and will open once again, after the winter break, in April 2012 with the first stage in Slovenia's Log-Dragomer.
