Tours d'Areu
The Tours d'Areu are square limestone towers situated above Sallanches and the mountain pastures of the Doran. The rock face is divided into five obvious towers about 200m high. The majority of the routes were climbed from the ground up without prior abseil inspection. The quality of the rock combined with the exposure, the beauty of the landscape and the peace and tranquillity make these routes in some way "special", long to be remembered on cold winter nights!

All the routes mentioned are safe, and although there may be some long run-outs between one bolt and the next these are never dangerous.

Getting there

From Chamonix drive to Sallanches. Turn left in the town center to get to the large church. Take the road signposted Route de Doran which runs alongside the right-hand side of the church. Ignore the numerous cross-roads and continue up via the hairpin bends to the large gravel clearing near the Burzier lift.

Unless you own a four-wheel drive leave your car here and continue on foot to the Rifugio di Doran (1.30 hrs). Alternatively, it is possible to rent a 4x4 in Salanches at Le Cheresy (tel. 581016). From the refuge walk up the obvious slope beneath the Forclaz to the left of the towers. The trail leads almost directly upwards to the towers and then continues rightwards beneath them. Alcootest starts to the right of the obvious cave situated at the base of the cliff. For La Nuit, start to the right of the arete.

Magic Magellan and Jonathan Livingstone take the smooth SE Face on the 4th tower, while Melusine tackles the arete. Bolts indicate the start of this route. For Aguirre walk past the 4th tower, descend to the 5th, and reach the large diagonal crack which divides the entire face. The route starts just a bit to the left.
