Route

The east face of Ra Gusela is truly an impressive face, especially when seen from Passo Giau. It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful and difficult walls in the surrounding area and consequently extremely popular with climbers. The delightful itinerary described here starts from Rifugio Averau and climbs the easy west face to the summit. The landscape is unique and the outing highly recommended.

Getting there

From Cortina take the road no 638 to Passo Giau. From Passo Giau drive down towards Selva di Cadore, to the chairlift at Fedare (2000m).

Access

Take the chairlift to reach Rifugio Averau, nestled just beneath the col “Forcella Nuvolau” (2413m).

Itinerary

From Rifugio Averau walk down alongside the piste towards the Cinque Torri. Reach the top of the “de Poctor” chairlift and then leave the piste abruptly, walking downhill in a south-easterly direction. Pass beneath the Monte Nuvolau rocky outcrop and then climb up onto the plateau and head towards the summit. Although there are no signs to mark the exact line of ascent, this poses no particular difficulties until the final slope. This is steep and requires some careful zigzags to reach the crest, which is followed briefly, keeping well clear of the cornice, to reach the small Madonna statue and the summit proper at 2595m.

Descent

Return along the line of ascent to Rifugio Averau, famous for its excellent home cooking.

Gear

Normal equipment for winter walking, snowshoes and poles, lightweight crampons.

Difficulty

Snowpack must be well bonded and stable.
