The basin of spectacular Lake Avostanis is closed to the north by a solid limestone wall, finely chiselled by superficial karst , 100 meters high and almost 300 meters wide.
The routes on this crag ascend extremely compact limestone, up slabs, vertical faces and some cracks. Overhangs are rare and the style of climbing is very technical and always requires precise footwork.
The first routes date back to the early 1980s. The easiest and oldest climb was established by the mountain guide S.D. Infanti and the crag was subsequently developed by the mountain guide Attilio De Rovere, Giorgio Bianchi, Gianni Cattaino and co. Recently a small sector to the left of the main wall has been bolted by young Osvaldo Edel.
With more than 120 sport climbs and a handful of multipitch routes, Avostanis is ideal for all those who climb from 4b to 8b.
Take the A23 motorway and exit at Carnia. Continue along the highway towards Passo Monte Croce Carnico (S.S. 52 Bis) up to the hamlet Cleulis, in the Municipality of Paluzza. Close to the bar Pacai turn off right up Via Martiri di Pramosio and continue along the forest road to Malga Promosio (1526m) , park here. Walk uphill, gently at first then more steeply, to reach Lake Avostanis (1936m) and the crag after about 1 hour. The crag is located at an altitude of 2000 meters and faces south.
