There is this very particular valley in Italy’s Dolomites that joins the regions South Tyrol with Veneto: the Landro Valley. It is special because it is not particularly steep and also because it leads directly to Cortina d’Ampezzo. It’s also exceptional because, as you first enter the valley from Toblach, you almost get the impression you’ve stepped into a little Yosemite. Steep walls plunge down on the left and right, while the valley floor is beautifully wide, protected by a lush forest and with two beautiful mountain lakes.

The first one is Toblacher See, Lake Toblach, right at the valley entrance. The second one is Dürrensee ,Lago di Landro, and it is above this lake that one of the most beautiful and panoramic crags in the entire valley has been established.

The crag is divided into two sectors and hosts 36 routes in total. The majority are in the 6a - 7b region, and the climbing is vertical and slightly overhanging, past small pockets and crimps on solid rock.

The crag boasts two single pitch masterpieces in the Dolomites, namely Milchstraße and Wunderwerk, two routes which are not too difficult and shouldn’t be missed. The astonishing panorama and splendid view onto the lake and its incredible colours is the icing on the cake for a gorgeous day out.

Access

From Toblach / Dobbiaco drive towards Venice - Val di Landro. Follow the road up a the valley for quite a while, until you arrive at the second restaurant at Lake Landro. Park on the left (on the lake shore). From the parking lot follow the small path that leads towards the crag at the lefthand side of the lake. At a certain point on your right you spot a wooden bridge where you can cross the river. Continue on path number 6 and at the junction, take the path to your right that leads along the side of the lake. A cairn marks the start of the small path that leads uphill, leftwards, into the forest and to the base of the crag.

Period

The crag is located at 1450m. Recommended months: April to November
