A huge earthquake hit Nepal at 11:56 today (8:11 CET). Two devastating tremors, one circa 35 minutes after the other measuring 7.9 and 6.4 on the Richter Scale, devastated Kathmandu and much surrounding area, causing at least 800 deaths. According to many sources, the provisional death toll is expected to rise dramatically.

The Everest area was hit, too, and an avalanche trigged from Pumori and swept through Everest Base Camp. Twitter posts sent from Everest Base Camp report about many victims, and some international media have mentioned up to 18 mountaineers dead. Others report of 3, while others mention 8. Time will be needed for the full extent of earthquake to be known, also because it seems as if many climbers were one the mountain’s high camps when the earthquake struck.

What is certain is that Base Camp was hit by a large avalanche that was triggered on Pumori and perhaps also on Nuptse. This is the season with the greatest numbers of mountaineers preparing to climb the highest mountain in the world and according to official Nepalese sources, when the earthquake struck at least 1,000 people, including 400 foreigners, were at Everest Base Camp.

The epicenter was located at Lamjung about 180 kilometers northwest of Kathmandu. This area, between Kathmandu and the town of Pokhara, is a base for the highly popular treks around Annapurna and Manuslu. This is the largest earthquake recorded in Nepal after the terrible earthquake that destroyed the cities of Kathmandu, Munger and Muzaffarpur on 15 January 1934 and caused 11,000 deaths in Nepal and 7000 in the the Indian state of Bihar-

The Nepalese government has declared a state of emergency are rescue operations are in full swing. Given the situation, it is clear that the death toll is entirely provisional and could rise further.
