The Ice World Cup, which recently matured into an officially recognized discipline within the UIAA framework, received its first setback last week when the organisers in Quebec, Canada, were forced to cancel the fourth stage of the IWC 2003.
This leaves the 2003 calendar with just three events, Pitztal, Val Daone and Saas-Fee, all planned for January 2003. Last years third ever IWC was won by Ksenia Sdobnikova (Russia) and shared between Dimitri Bytchkov (Russia) and Harald Berger (Austria).
The Ice Climbing World Championship 2003, won by Evgeny Krivosheitsev (Ukraine) and Ines Papert (Germany) last year in Pitztal, is scheduled for Kirov in March. Temperatures there are currently 20°C and work is already underway at constructing the giant ice-tower. Lets hope it stays this cold and good luck to both the organisers and athletes!
