Piolet d'Or 2012, the 6 nominations

The XX Piolet d'Or will take place in Courmayeur (Italy) and Chamonix (France) from 21 - 24 March 2012. Here are the 6 nominations for the coveted golden ice axe, while Frenchman Robert Paragot will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Piolet d'Or Asia won by Denis Urubko and Gennadiy Durov for Pik Pobeda

Kazakh alpinists Denis Urubko and Gennadiy Durov have won the Piolet d'or Asia for the new route they established last August on Pik Pobeda (7439m).

Piolet d'Or 2011, winners, diversity and the challenges of alpinism

Two Piolets d'Or were awarded on 15 April in Chamonix, France, during the IXX Piolet d'Or 2011: to the Greenland Big Walls by Sean Villanueva, Nicolas and Olivier Favresse, Ben Ditto and Bob Shepton and to the ascent up Mount Logan in Canada by Yasushi Okada and Katsutaka Yokoyama from Japan. On 16 April in Courmayeur the British mountaineer Doug Scott received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Walter Bonatti who, like Reinhold Messner, had preceded him in the Hall of Fame. Piolet d'Or 2011: Mount Logan and Greenland Big Walls the winners

Two prizes awarded last night in Chamonix during the IXX Piolet d'Or: Mount Logan in Canada by Yasushi Okada and Katsutaka Yokoyama, and the Big Walls in Greenland by Sean Villanueva, Nicolas and Olivier Favresse and Ben Ditto.

Piolet d'or Asia won by Okada and Katsutake. Hasegawa wins lifetime achievement award.

On 22/10/2010 in Korea's capital Seoul the Japanese alpinists Yasushi Okada and Katsutake Yokoyama won the fifth edition of the Piolet d'or Asia, while the lifetime achievement award went to their fellow countryman Tsuneo Hasegawa.

Piolet d'Or 2009, the winners

Last Saturday the Piolets d'Or 2009 were assigned in Chamonix and a total of three awards were given in this 17th edition: Kazuya Hiraide and Kei Taniguchi from Japan for their ascent of Kamet (India); Fumitaka Ichimura, Yusuke Sato and Kazuki Amano from Japan for their new route on Kalanka (India); Ueli Steck and Simon Anthamatten from Switzerland for their new route up Tengkampoche (Nepal). Italian mountaineer Walter Bonatti received the first ever award in recognition of his remarkable achievements. It is worth pointing out that Kei Taniguchi is the first woman to receive a Piolet.

Piolet d'or 2009: the six candidates

The 6 nominees for the 17th Piolet d'Or, scheduled for 25 April 2009: Dave Turner (USA) for his solo ascent on the East Face of Cerro Escudo (Torres del Paine, Chile), Simon Anthamatten and Ueli Steck (Switzerland) for their new route up the N Face of Tengkampoche (Nepal), Stéphane Benoist and Patrice Glairon Rappaz (France) for their new route up the South Face of Nuptse (Nepal). These are in the running with three Japanese teams: Kazuya Hiraide and Kei Taniguchi for their first ascent up the SE Face of Kamet (India), Fumitaka Ichimura, Yusuke Sato and Kazuki Amano for their ascent up the North Face of Kalanka (India) and, last but not least, Fumitaka Ichimura, Yusuke Sato and Katsutaka Yokoyama for the enchainment of two difficult routes on McKinley, Alaska.

From 22 - 25 April the 17th edition of the Piolets d'Or will take place between Chamonix and Courmayeur. This is possibly the most famous mountaineering award in the world, so much so that it has been defined as the Oscar of alpinism.

The 17th edition of the Piolet d'or scheduled for 15 February 2008 in Valle d'Aosta will not take place, as stated by organisers of the prestigious recognition which should have been awarded to the best mountaineering achievements in 2007.

Piolet d'Or Asia to Korean Garmush ascent

November 2007. The second edition of the Piolet d'or Asia was held in Seoul on 2 November and was awarded to the Korean team comprised of Sim Kwang Sik, Kang Yongsun and Joo MinSu who in July 2007 carried out the first ascent of the Garmush West Face (Hindu Kush, Pakistan).

Piolet d'or 2006 awarded to Prezelj and Lorencic for Chomo Lhari

On 26 January 2007 Marko Prezelj and Boris Lorencic from Slovenia were awarded the "Golden ice axe" for their new route on Chomo Lhari. Pavle Kozjek was awarded the Spectators Choice for his new route climbed solo up Cho Oyu. This was the 16th edition of the mountaineering award, created by the French Montagnes magazine, to honour the best mountaineering achievement of the previous year.
