Trekking Itinerary Part 3

Part 3
The Rolwaling valley

Day 11
Tsho Rolpa - 1st camp on the glacier
(4800m), 4/5 hrs

The old path led along the northern shore of the lake to reach the Drolambau Glacier, but avalanches and landslides have destroyed it. A new path now leads up the other side to a sandy section at 4900m before returning to the rubble-covered glacier, dominated by the imposing western and eastern Bigphera-Go (6660 m and 6730 m). Camp on the glacier above the lake.

Day 12
1st camp - 2nd camp on the glacier
(5250m), 5/6 hrs

A rocky spur eastwards (towards Bigphera) marks the border between Drolambau and its junction. Reach this and climb up, past some technical sections and fixed rope to aid the porters , to the most spectacular and nerve-wracking camp on this trip. This eagle’s nest is situated 200m above the glacier and opposite the seracs of Bigphera-Go's West Face.

Day 13
2nd camp - Tesi Lapcha
(5750m), 4/5 hrs

Having climbed onto the Drolambau a flattish section leads onto this vast glacier and offers spectacular views of Tengi Ragi Tau (6943 m), Bigphera-Go and Dragkar-Go (6793 m). A slope beneath Tengi Ragi Tau leads, steeply at first, to the Tesi Lapcha pass. The camping place is just beyond the imposing overhangs.

Day 14
Ascent of Parchamo (6270m) 5/6 h - descent to Thengpo (4320m) 3/4 hrs

The ascent is neither long nor difficult - leaving at 6.00am enables a return to camp at 11.00am. The long descent past desolate scree slopes leads to Tengpopast, a pretty village dominated by the beautiful Teng Kangpoche (6500 m). This is a long and tiring day.

Day 15
Thengpo - Thame
(3800m) 3 hrs

A relaxing stage which offers, once in the Kumbu valley and the delights of civilisation, an afternoon's relax and visit to the beautiful monastery. Telephone, lodge, Coca Cola, small restaurants and relative wealth enable one to finally relax. Thame is one of the most important Sherpa villages and, with its hydroelectric station, also provides the valley's power supply.

Day 16
Thame - Namche Bazar
(3400m) 3/4 hrs

A long walk on a wide and popular path leads past some of the most beautiful sculted stones to Namche - the Cortina of Nepal….

Day 17
Namche Bazar - Lukla
(2800m) - 6 hrs

Follow the obvious path from Namche Bazar to Lukla.
