Kathmandu

An important part of the trek should be dedicated to discovering Kathmandu. Its singularity is dictated by the contrast between old and new and the various religions and ethnic groups - this mix makes Kathmandu the unrivalled cultural center of Nepal.

Durbar Square is representative of this harmonious clash which began when this small Kingdom opened its borders to the West in the 1950's. This square, as well as Baktapur, Patanand and Pashupatiath, are difficult to describe in words and should not be missed at any costs.

Tradition is continually challenged by progress and modernity, leaving a taste both sweet and bitter in the visitors' mouths. The historic and central Durbar Square stands therfore in stark contrast to the modern streets nearby, which rival the most congested and polluted Western metropolies.

Daily life revolves around these streets, and between a myriad of booths and market stalls one sees a great mix of people from all walks of life: beggars and insistent taxi drivers, tourist following porters and cars, rickshaws, bicycles and three-wheeled tempos all evading holy cows, with rubbish and "Puja", the Hindu offering to Shiva, littered liberally underfoot.
