The twin-towered Torre di Toblin rise solitarily above the wide amphitheatre that looks out onto the fantastic north walls of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. The panorama is quite superb and because of this dominating position the Austrian troops established an excellent vantage point from its summit to monitor the nearby Italian Army during the First World War. The modern Sentiero delle Scalette runs alongside the original Austrian route and remnants of wooden ladders up a series of more recent ladders past steep chimneys through the Torre’s exposed North Face. The descent along the Sentiero attrezzato del Cappellano Hosp leads down easier terrain along the stepped NE flank, past typical Dolomite formations. A great Dolomite ambience shrouded in history is the Leitmotif of this short and exposed Via Ferrata, much to be recommended as a testing ground for harder Vie Ferrate to come.
Getting there
From Cortina follow the road to Misurina via Passo Tre Croci. Then take the Tre Cime toll road up to Rifugio Auronzo (2298m). Access
From Rifugio Auronzo take the path that leads easily beneath the south faces of the Tre Cime, first to Rifugio Lavaredo and Forcella Lavaredo and then to Rifugio Locatelli (1.30 hours). From here continue upwards along the narrow path past Forcella S. Candido, nestled between Sasso di Sesto and Torre Toblin, and on beneath its western and northern flanks to the base of the Ferrata in about half an hour. Itinerary
The base of the ferrata is situated on the North Face close to a stepped corner that leads onto a scree terrace. Continue up 100m high steep chimneys equipped with a series of ladders to the col beneath the two peaks. Traverse left to reach the final airy ladder which leads to the narrow summit. Descent
Descend along the Sentiero attrezzato del Cappellano Hosp that leads down easier terrain along the stepped NE flank. Equipped sections protect the most exposed points of this descent, which quickly reaches the base before joining up with the path used for the ascent beneath Forcella S. Candido. Continue on down to Rifugio Locatelli. Gear
Normal via ferrata kit. Maps/Bibliography
Via Ferratas of the Italian Dolomites: Vol 1 by John Smith and Graham Fletcher. Cicerone Press 2002 Difficulty
Given its exposure the Sentiero delle Scalette requires surefootedness and experience on this type of terrain. As with all of the Tre Cime, and just as in any mountain environment, a watchful eye must be on the lookout for changes in the weather and sudden thunderstorms.
