Via Ferrata Piz da Lech and Sassongher normal route: renovation works in Alta Badia

Throughout summer 2013 the mountain guide group "Alta Badia Guides" based in Corvara, Italy, completely renovated two of the valley's most popular outings, the normal route to the summit of Sassongher and Via Ferrata Piz by Lech (Boeseekofel Klettersteig), Sella, Dolomites.

The works entailed replacing all in-situ anchors, cables and ladders. All equipment was removed and transported back down into the valley for proper waste disposal.

Some minor adjustments and improvements were made to the original via ferrata Piz da Lech -also known as the Boeseekofel Klettersteig - for safety reasons, such as the start of the actual ferrata which is now located on the side of the starting gully and no longer exposed to falling rocks. Other changes include minor variations to the route to render the outing more homogeneous and fun to climb such as the spectacular new bridge, located towards the end of the ferrata, that now adds a perfect touch to the last section of this route.

More than 200 metal pegs of different lengths were used, as well as almost 400 meters of steel cable, the bridge and two ladders, circa 8 metres high and weighing over 90 kg. Works began in summer due to last winter's residual snow, lasted until late autumn and all the mountain guides of the Alta Badia Guides group took part in the operations.

This works were commissioned by the Corvara and Colfosco Tourist Board thanks to specific funding provided by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and the support of the Alta Badia Tourist Board, the Municipality of Corvara and the company Grandi Funivie.
