Maladiere title
This cliff towers impressively over the road which leads from Balme to Cluse. From below it seems inaccessible and, to tell the truth, somewhat friable. Appearances can be deceptive though, and in this case the rock is perfect and the protection is excellent. Leaning over the edge of the cliff is quite scary because of the exposure, and so too is abseiling, which is reminiscent of the abseils in the Verdon. Good ropework and prussic loops are essential therefore. There are many climbs on the left-hand side of the crag which are more relaxing and less sustained.

Getting there

Drive along the A-road towards Cluses and turn off at Balme for Araches - Flaine. At Araches turn left (north) for Sigismond, Chatillon and La Frasse. Park the car after a few kilometers in a large clearing near an obvious wooden cross. From this parking lot continue on foot along the forest road to Chevran. After a first fork the road divides sharply - take the left road to Pointe de Chevran foret.

Keep on bearing rightwards at the next two forks until signs and a yellow-orange marker lead off to the left. Follow these to the pile of stones which indicate the first abseil point.
