World Cup in Wiener Neustadt, Austria The 1999 World Cup series started on the 17th and 18th of April in Wiener Neustadt, 30km from Vienna. For various reasons only three Italian athletes competed in the 120 strong field, but the two men, Brenna and Zardini, qualified for the final while Luisa Iovane made it to the quarter finals. Interestingly Golob, Arnaud Petit and Legrand were the highest placed non-finalists. The woman's final worked its way obliquely up through an extremely technical, overhanging corner. Martina Cufar's excellent performance was improved upon slightly by Liv Sansoz, but Muriel Sarkany surpassed all and claimed victory by reaching the belay chain. After a brief pause while the route setters changed the route, it was the men's turn. Christian Brenna's highpoint, just below that of the Bindehammer brothers, looked not good enough for a place on the podium, but surprisingly none of the others climbed higher. Both Zardini and Francois Petit had carabiner trouble; the former was unlucky since a carabiner unclipped as he climbed passed and the latter had difficulty clipping - both were on excellent form and could have climbed much higher. So the Bindhammer brothers claimed their first international success, with last years World Cup runner-up Brenna, reaching third place. The competition, organized by the Alpenverein, was definitely a success although the men's final proved to be too intense. The inevitable pauses between one final and the next were felt to be unduly long, but thankfully there were many interesting stands to look at.
