adidas ROCKSTARS 2014 - Climbing meets Music at the Porsche-Arena in Stuttgart
On the 19th and 20th of September, adidas ROCKSTARS enters the next round. The invitational contest for the world’s best bouldering athletes with a 20,000 EUR prize purse takes place in the modern Porsche-Arena in Stuttgart, Germany for the third time in a row.
Apart from climbing skills and creativity, bouldering athletes need motivation and adrenaline to reach maximum performance in a competition, which is why adidas ROCKSTARS combines elite sports with live music to create an intoxicating climbing rock show.
Climbing meets Music: Heated up by the punk rock band Badasstics and battling DJs, cheered on by 3,000 enthusiastic spectators, world champions and world cup winners demonstrate their impressive skills and enjoy being celebrated like rock stars.
The previous adidas ROCKSTAR champions, triple Boulder World Champion and overall World Cup Winner 2013 Dmitrii Sharafutdinov from Russia (victor 2011), World Champion Overall (L/S/B) 2012 Sean McColl from Canada (victor 2012) and surprise winner 2013, Jernej Kruder from Slovenia, will all be back. This year, they are facing fierce competition from Germany. Jan Hojer is in the shape of his life. With three Boulder World Cup victories this season, he won the overall title.
The women’s field is headed, amongst others, by the exceptionally gifted Sasha DiGiulian (USA), the youngest and third woman in the world to climb the difficulty grade of 5.14d (9a), and boulder badass Shauna Coxsey (GBR), who claimed podium places at six of the eight Boulder World Cups this year, winning twice.
A total of 70 top-class athletes from 20 different countries are invited to adidas ROCKSTARS, including the best men and women of the IFSC world ranking, the top three of the German Boulder Cup and the European Youth Cup, as well as winners of other international climbing competitions.
Route setters Chris Danielson (USA), Manuel Hassler (SUI), Laurent Laporte (FRA), Adam Pustelnik (POL) and Matthias Woitzuck (AUT) will serve the problems this year. The international team has a total of 68 years of experience in competition route setting. A new super boulder will give them even more room for creativity.
In addition to 3,000 spectators who attended adidas ROCKSTARS in the Porsche-Arena, 33,000 people watched the live stream. 200,000 facebook users from 45 countries were reached in the course the event. adidas ROCKSTARS was also well received by TV stations around the globe. The result of the international TV distribution increased by more than 50 percent.
“We are thrilled about the great feedback we receive from TV”, says Axel Burkhardt of adidas Global Sports Marketing for Olympic Sports, Cycling and Outdoor. “3.210 transmissions in 182 countries with a total length of 1,067 hours speak for itself. Our half-hour adidas ROCKSTARS sports highlight was broadcasted 2,406 times worldwide and is still repeated by many TV stations.“
Meanwhile there are also adidas ROCKSTARS qualifiers in Asia. adidas China and adidas Korea have picked up the successful event concept and organise national ROCKSTARS Events. The winners now compete against the world’s bouldering elite in Stuttgart.
