TWIN BOLT STANCE CONNECTED BY A CHAIN
Matters are made much simpler if both bolts are already connected to each other by a belay chain, as it is no longer necessary to connect the two. Clipping the upper bolt before the leader starts off on the next pitch remains of utmost importance.

TWIN BOLT STANCE CONNECTED BY THREADS
Often threads are used to connect bolts (especially on mountain routes where the abseil line follows the line of ascent). Unless clearly new, they should not be trusted. Two different situations can be analysed:

    - a carabiner still fits through the bolt hangers. The stance can therefore be set up either in series or in parallel as described earlier, without having to depend on the threads.

    - the bolt hangers can not be clipped due to the width of the threads. As it is difficult to judge the nature of in-situ gear, we recommend that the threads be untied or cut and replaced with new ones. A small penknife will be found extremely useful in this case.

It is sometimes possible to thread in another thin kevlar cord, which can be used in addition to the existing threads to set up a stance.
