Lab has tested Ortovox's new Stratus 32 .
Here are our results:
The Stratus 32 is a highly technical rucksack designed specifically for ski mountaineering. It also performs well as an all-rounder for winter and summer activities.
It stands out for its robustness; all seams are double or even triple stitched; all major stress points have been reinforced and highly resistant fabrics have been employed. Its durability makes it suitable even for professional use (ski instructors, Mountain Guides, Mountain Rescue etc).
This sturdiness is however reflected in its weight: considering its size, the Stratus 32 is not the lightest.
Attention to detail is one of Ortovox's hallmarks and the essential ski and ice axe loops can be neatly tucked away when not needed.
As with all Ortovox rucksacks, the Stratus 32 has an outer and an inner compartment. The easily accessible outer compartment has been designed for essential ski mountaineering accessories: shovel, probe, First Aid Kit and bivi bag. A side zip and compression straps provide access to the inner compartment which contains enough space for all other gear.
Ortovox produces 20-40 liter rucksacks, and this 32 liter rucksack is good choice for 1-2 day outings.
Ortovox's patented ADS backsystem enables the width and height of the shoulder straps to be adjusted easily and quickly. Although at first glance it looks complicated, the ADS is in fact surprisingly simple to use.
The rucksack fits closely and its ergonomic body huggung profile performs well even when fully loaded.
Skis can be fixed either using the traditional V method (one on each side and joined at the top) or using the French method (skis placed vertically in the middle of the pack).
Other features include:
two ice axe holders, an inner pocket, a small removable foam pad to sit on, two small pockets on the hipbelt.
Volume 32 liters
Weight 1200 g
Dimensions 53 x 33 x 16 cm
