| Trekking Itinerary Part 2 Part 2 The Rolwaling valley Day 5 Simagaon - Gyalche (3050m), 7 hrs The Rolwaling valley transforms into a massive ravine and drops into the Bhote Kosi. This and the previous sections get round this obstacle. From Simigaon climb over the spur and enter the lower section of the Rolwaling at half height. This dense forest is uninhabited, and a long path between rhododendron bushes, often crossed by streams , leads to a sort of Far West outpost on the river banks where the valley narrows spectacularly. |

| Day 6 Gyalche - Beding (3640m), 7 hrs As one gains height the valley begins to open, the forest becomes less dense and the impressive Gauri Shankar first comes into view. This section is reminiscent of the Alps. A walk between conifers and babbling streams, grass fields inhabited by Nyimare, Ramding and Gyabrug Yersa, leads to Beding, the main village in Rolwaling valley. Day 7 Beding Rest and acclimatisation day. Beding is a typical Sherpa village nestling between the river and the mountain, enclosed by dry-stone walls which mark the start of small potato fields. Few people remain in the village: those that do are women and children, as the men are hard at work with their animals or on trekking or mountaineering expeditions. This day is dedicated to acclimatising, and is a great opportunity to wash, take photos, relax, but above all breathe in the air of this place, both physically and metaphorically. Day 8 Beding - Na Gaon (4200m), 3 hrs This short stretch leads to Na, a summer pasture on a plain beneath the towering Kang Nachugo (6735 m). This splendid camping place offers great views of Chobutse (6689 m). Day 9 Trek to Yalung La (5310m), 5/6 hrs This trek towards the pass on the southern side of the valley offers fantastic panoramas towards the Ripimo Glacier, Gauri Shankar and Tibet and helps the acclimatisation process for the demanding days to come. Day 10 Na - Omai Tsho (4800 m) - Tsho Rolpa (4500m), 5 hrs Tsho Rolpa is a glacial lake formed by a natural dam of ice and glacial morraine. Meltwater from the glaciers threatens to burst the dam and an international project employing about 100 workers is constructing a run-off channel that should reduce the water level and protect the inhabitants of the Rolwaling valley and Bhote Kosi. This construction site is the only place where one can contact "civilisation" in case of emergency. This stretch is short but a panoramic detour on the Ripimo Shar glacier towards lOmai Tsho (4800 m) is another good occasion to acclimatise and wander about. |
