Classic spring outing, both famous and highly popular. The obvious and even-angled slope totals 700m height gain and, since it faces north, can often be climbed as late as May when the snow has long melted at the lakes down below. Most opt for the wider right-hand fork as the rocky Mangart walls discharge rocks in spring, but it is also possible to ski down the left-hand fork, with similar difficulties.

ACCESS

Access: From Tarvisio to Fusine, then fllow the road to the lakes
Departure: Lago Superiore di Fusine, 941 m

ROUTE

From Lago Superiore di Fusine take the forest track and quickly reach Alpe del Lago (path No. 514-515). Follow the path through the wood and, when this peters out, continue upwards on the right-hand side of the vally where the vegetation becomes less dense. Forcella della Lavina and its entire line of ascent springs into view at the edge of the forest (1.30 hours). Ascend up the righthandside of the even-angles slope without difficulties. Just beneath the col either traverse steeply left to reach the lip, or climb direct via a narrow cleft between the rocks (2.00 hours)

DESCENT

Descend along the line of ascent. Alternatively, ski down the other gully (hydrographic right). The difficulties are similar, but bear in mind that since itis exposed to rockfall, especially in spring, since the gully is narrow and close to the Traunig rock face. traverse past the forest section by skiing along the riverbed, which leads to the right of Alpe del Lago.
