Snowboarding in Austria, Arlberg

Trittkopf

This is an alternative for snowboard freaks and recommended only for expert skiers who have a very good head for heights. The snow must be particularly stable since the descent is on the lee slope of an enormous cornice of wind accumulated snow.

On the summit of Trittkopf, Arlberg

From the top of the gondolalift climb leftwards to the device used to set off controlled avalanches. Continue along the side of the mountain to the summit in about 1/2 hour. Pay particular care not to walk too far westwards onto the crest. Snowshoes are recommended if there is no beaten track.

From the summit descend northwards (leftwards as seen from Zürs) to a very exposed ridge. When this widens descend westwards beneath the infamous cornice. From here ski down into the Pazieltal valley and then keep left to reach the pistes.
