Riders on the Storm
The 1300m route, first ascended by Norbert Bätz, Peter Dittrich, Bernd Arnold, Wolfgang Güllich and Kurt Albert, takes a direct line up the compact granite East Face of Paine's Torre Central and is widely considered to be one of the crown jewels in Patagonia's repertoire of classic climbs.
Originally graded VI 5.12d A3, the route was repeated in 2006 by a strong Belgian team comprised of Nicolas Favresse, Olivier Favresse, Seán Villanueva and Mike Lecomte who managed to free some, though not all, of the aid pitches.
It remains a formidable challenge and a testament to the ability and foresight of the Germans who pioneered the line over a three week period in 1991.
GETTING THERE
Reach the Parque Nacional Torres del Paine from Puerto Natales. From Puerto Natales various bus operators offer open-ended return tickets to the park, almost 120km away. Buses depart at around 7 am and take over 4 hours to reach the park. The main entrance is Guardería & Rifugio Laguna Amarga, at the northern end of the park; all tourists are brought here and they must purchase a park permit and register before entering. Buses then continue to the Sede Administrativa Lago del Toro, from where most depart in the early afternoon for the return trip to Puerto Natales.
