Flavio Crespi, Climbing World Cup

The eigth stage of the Difficulty World Cup was won last weekend by Flavio Crespi and Alexandra Eyer. The two athletes produced their best competion result ever in Brno, Czech Republic, and although in the past both had eyed victory on numerous occasions, neither of them had been able to secure the top podium position up until now.

Crespi beat a strong field to win his first ever WC competition, ahead of home-favourite Tomasz Mrazek and Alexandre Chabot, second and third respectively. The young Italian powered through a set of undercuts which had stopped Chabot, and came to within a few moves from the top. Mrazek exited last and climbed past Chabot's highpoint, but then fell 4 holds short of Crespi.

The women's event proved to be surprising too. In a final in which 7 out of the 8 finalists fell within the short space of just 1 meter, Alexandra Eyer from Switzerland pulled off the impossible and beat all, placing first ahead of Olha Shalahina and Maja Vidmar. Angela Eiter, the only ahlete to top out in the Semifinal, placed fourth, beating closest rival Muriel Sarkany into 5th place.

After these surprise results, and Sarkany and Chabot's victory in Valence (France) a fortnight ago, the World Cup 2004 will now be decided in Kranj this weekend. All podium places are up for grabs, and this final stage will prove conclusive: will Mrazek manage to beat Chabot? The Czech leads by 35 points, but the Frenchman has been winning more competitions of late... And will Angela Eiter manage to grasp overall victory from Muriel Sarkany? The Belgian has a 39 point margin, both have won 3 competitions... It's going to prove close. See you in Slovenia!
