Papert and Krivosheitsev win Ice Climbing World Championship 2003

Ines Papert and Evgeny Krivosheitsev win the Ice Climbing World Championship 2003 held in Kirov, Russia
In a repeat of last year’s performance, Ines Papert and Evgeny Krivosheitsev won the Ice Climbing World Championship 2003. Held in Russia’s Kirov last weekend, the two favourites fought off strong competition to retain their titles, won in Pitztal last year.

Papert was followed closely - almost too close for comfort - by Marina Rashitova, who reached identical heights in the Open, Semi-Final and Final. In the end though she placed second due to her slower ascents, while her teammate Maslova Marina placed third.

Papert's victory crowns an amazing season in which she won all there was to win: the Ice World Cup 2003 in three straight sets and now the Championship. Her recent repeats outdoors (read Mission Impossible M11 ) demonstrate that she is equally at home on some of the hardest mixed routes around.

Krivosheitsev was the clear winner in the Men’s event, climbing 2 meters higher than nearest rival Oleg Tchereshnev in the Final. He had to – Harald Berger, Samuel Anthamatten and Alexei Dengin were all equal after the Semi-Final and strong contenders for the title. Krivosheitsev pulled out all the stops to make this second title his own, ahead of Tchereshnev second and World Cup winner Harald Berger third.

Krivosheitsev was without a doubt the man of the competition, placing second in the Speed event, behind Aleksander Matveev who retains his World Championship title.
