Matterhorn Cervino 150 - the grand finale

For the grand finale of the Matterhorn Cervino 150, i.e. the 10 day celebration of the 150th anniversary of the first two ascents of Gran Becca, Valtournenche and Valle d'Aosta have prepared three days of mountain climbing and culture.
1 / 20
The Night of the Matterhorn. On 16th July, the eve of the conquest along the streets of the centre of Breuil-Cervinia, a festival that will continue all through the night.
Enrico Romanzi / Breuil-Cervinia Valtournenche
These will be three outstanding days, beneath the Matterhorn of course, that beautiful and impossible mountain. Three days to remember and savor the Golden Age of alpinism, the era that through the truly epic first ascents of the Matterhorn witnessed both its end and a new beginning. Three days to relive many of those moments and stories that took place on this great mountain during the last 150 years.

On Thursday, July 16, Breuil-Cervinia will stage The dou or Cervin (Serven) - the night of the Matterhorn. This vigil, this celebration will last all night long and pay homage to the Matterhorn with a crescendo of historical re-enactments, a touring theatre, folk group performances, music and dance, attempts at traditional sport, tasting sessions and pubs and bars open until late. The movie marathon from 18:30 to dawn will screen some of the genuine masterpieces that have helped render the Matterhorn so great. From 21:00 the music of L'Orage will rock (the Matterhorn, too). The unmissable, crazy, thrilling group from the Valle d’Aosta with its mountain rock is… not to be missed. Just like the midnight bonfire and the launch of lanterns that will fill (like prayers) the night sky over the Matterhorn.

Friday, July 17 is the day of the main players. Mountaineers like Reinhold Messner, Catherine Destivelle, Hervé Barmasse and Simon Anthamatten will talk about "their" Matterhorn and their mountaineering, together with Mario Calabresi, editor of La Stampa, which whom they’ll discuss their experiences in the mountains and the value and importance of mountaineering for mankind. Messner will introduce his latest book, "Matterhorn. The Most Noble Cliff"; Destivelle will talk about his new adventure as an editor and writer; Barmasse will discuss his first book The mountain inside, published by Laterza. Italian journalist Sandro Filippini and Reinhold Messner will talk about a story of deep friendship touched upon in the book Walter Bonatti, the brother I never knew I had. All of this will be followed by the grand finale, with these 4 alpinists taking a leading role in "Tales of the Matterhorn”, hosted by Kay Rush with original videos, music by L'Orage and many special stories dedicated to the history, the epic ascents and the climbing on Gran Becca. The evening will explore the lives of Jean-Antoine Carrel and Edward Whymper, of the abbot Gorret, Luigi Carrel, Walter Bonatti and much more... Not to be missed!

Then, on Saturday, July 18 the festival will celebrate the final days and the Matterhorn will shine brightly... and the first ascent of the Matterhorn will turn into a spectacle of lights, music and fireworks.
