After its debut at Bozeman in mid-December, the Ice Climbing World Cup presented by The North Face travelled all the way to Korea’s Cheongsong Eoreumgol Valley, reputed to be one of the best ice climbing venues in Asia, for its much-awaited second leg this season.

50 male athletes and 29 female athletes took part in Saturday’s Qualifications, during which 22-year old local climber HanNaRai Song stole the show with her only top that day, while much to the home crowd’s disappointment ace WoonSeoon Shin failed to qualify for the finals, just like Russia’s Alexey Tomilov. On Sunday it was Song once again who demonstrated with disarming ease why she is widely considered the rising star of Korean climbing by cruising to clinch the only top in the finals. In doing so she beat her teammate Myoung Lee and Nadezhda Gallyamova, second and third respectively. HeeYoung Park made short work of the men’s final but the Korean dropped his ice axe - his cry of anguish will reputedly be remembered for many years to come. The last athlete to compete, Maxim Tomilov made no such mistake and powered comfortably to within just a few moves from the top to take his second win this season.

Cheongsong also hosted the Speed Climbing World Cup and this was won on Sunday morning by an all-star Russian team that took home all the medals: .Nikolai Kuzovlov and Ekaterina Feoktistova won gold, Maxim Vlasov and Nadezda Smirnova silver, Egor Trapeznikov and Maria Krasavina bronze.

The third stage of Ice Climbing World Cup will take place next weekend at Saas-Fee in Switzerland, before moving on to Rabenstein in Italy and Champagny in France before finishing off at Kirov in Russia.
