After the "summer break" which left room for competitions such as the Rock Master and the World Championships, the Lead World Cup 2014 kicked back into action last weekend with the first of its three Asian stages at Mokpo, Korea.

38 men and 32 women competed in this leg won by Jakob Schubert, the only athlete to top out in the Final, ahead of Domen Škofic and Romain Desgranges. Vice World Champion Ramón Julian Puigblanque, who together with the Desgranges had dominated the Semifinal, placed fourth ahead of Sean McColl, 5th. Stefano Ghisolfi, the only Italian who travelled to Korea, proved once again that he is more than capable of qualifying for the Finals, and the climber from Turin finished an excellent 6th ahead of Akito Matsushima and Gautier Supper. A glance at the 9th place indicates just how difficult it is to reach the Finals: current World Champion Adam Ondra failed to qualify by just one hold, despite being the only athlete to have topped out on both qualifying routes.

These latest results mean that Schubert has now extended his lead in the overall standings, and with 410 points he is now 104 points ahead of second-placed Frenchman Desgranges. McColl currently lies in provisional third with 295 points, head of Skofic who has 259 points.

The women's event was won, by a mere 2 holds, by Mina Markovic who celebrated her first victory this season. The Slovenian beat young Belgian promise Anak Verhoeven and France's Hélène Janicot, second and third respectively, ahead of Magdalena Röck, Katharina Posch, Jain Kim, Christine Schranz and Aika Tajima, 4th to 8th respectively in the Final.

Thanks to this result Markovic is now back in the running for the overall title but she faces an uphill struggle: while she had 314 points, Kim is in the lead with 427 points, ahead of Röck with 395 points and Verhoeven with 320 points.

The men's Speed World Cup was won by Marcin Dzienski ahead of Libor Hroza and Danyl Boldyrev, while the women's event was won by Iuliia Kaplina ahead of Anouck Jaubert and Patrycja Chudziak.

The next stage of the Lead and Speed World Cup takes place this weekend in China's Wujiang, before moving on to Japan's Inzai on 25 and 26 October.
