The Italian Bouldering Cup got off to a great start last Sunday when over 120 climbers homed in on the Italian capital for the first lef of the 2014 season that resulted in confirmations, surprises and above all great excitement.

Confirmation came from Gabriele Moroni who after having been absent from the Italian Bouldering Cup for a while won from afar; first he competed in the (by no means easy) qualification rounds to then finish the day in style. Yes, because despite the pressure (above all from last year's winner Michael Piccolruaz), Moroni was the only one to send three of the final problems. Stefan Scarperi placed an excellent second with two tops, while Andrea Zanone celebrated his best competition performance to date.

The surprise came in the women's final, where young Asja Gollo caught everyone offguard to win her first Italian Bouldering Cup. In truth the competition was always an intense battle between all finalists but, right as the time was about to run out on the very last problem, Gollo stuck the dyno and won. She was followed by Annalisa De Marco and Jenny Lavarda, second and third respectively.

There was plenty of excitement, as comp speaker Daniele Adriani told Planetmountain: "I've witnessed lots of competitions but this one was special, one of the best I've ever seen. The route setters Donato Lella and Luca Parisse did a superb job, got everyone to climb and set some spectacular problems. The competition was a real climbing marathon, from 9 in the morning to 9 at night, but when Moroni stuck the dyno to win, well, the crowd went wild!"
