Ski Mountaineering World Championships 2013: French win Individual gold

14.02.2013 by Planetmountain

Bon Mardion William and Laetitia Roux from France won the Individual race yesterday at the Ski Mountaineering World Championships 2013. Silver was won by teammates Matheo Jacquemoud and Axelle Mollaret, while bronze went to Spain's Kilian Jornet Burgada and Italy's Gloriana Pellissier.

William Bon Mardion, Matheo Jacquemoud, Kilian Jornet Burgada: these are the names of the first three to cross the finishing line in yesterday's Individual race at the 2013 Ski Mountaineering World Championships currently taking place at Les Ecrins in France. So after having competed together on Sunday to win the Team Race, the two strong Frenchmen have once again proven that they are on unbeatable form, wining gold and silver in the sought-after Individual race. After a vertical gain of 1735m across almost 13km these medals damaged Kilian Jornet Burgada most of all: the Iberian had got off to a lightning start and victory seemed in his grasp, but the two Frenchmen worked perfectly as a team, caught and overtook him to then battle it out between themselves in the final sprint. It's worth noting Damiano Lenzi's the excellent performance, 4th and just off the podium therefore but only a minute behind super champion Jornet.

In the women's competition it was Laetitia Roux once again who commanded the field, winning across a distance of circa 12 km with 1480 metres altitude difference. On the slopes of Pelvoux the 27-year-old athlete from France won the Individual race, stopping the clock after a mere one hour and twenty minutes, four minutes ahead of her teammate Axelle Mollaret with whom she had won gold in Sunday's Team Race. Bronze went to the expert Italian Gloriana Pellissier who was beaten in the final sprint by just a hair's breadth... read a mere two seconds!

This morning all take part in the Vertical race, the gruelling 600-metre climb which takes no prisoners.
