Search continues for the three missing Italian climbers in the Ecrins Massif

01.12.2012 by Planetmountain

The search continues today for Francesco Cantù, Damiano Barabino and Luca Gaggianese, the three Italian alpinists missing in the Ecrins massif since last Monday.

It'll be a busy Saturday for the Gendarmerie di Briançon mountain rescue team. Another difficult day after Friday when, despite strong winds and difficult conditions on the mountain, no one spared themselves. But unfortunately the search mission, the helicopter flights, have been unsuccessful so far.

Today the plan includes, amongst other things, to check the area where the last GPS signal was sent from the climbers' mobile phone. Furthermore, a series of flights are scheduled to check the flanks on the Temple des Écrins refuge and the Glacier Blanc, and dogs will be used at the Col des Avalanches. Further checks will be carried out below Dôme des Ecrins (it is believed likely that they may have descended here) and on the Bonne Pierre glacier.

This is the sixth day of the search and rescue operation, the seventh on the mountain for Francesco Cantù, Luca Gaggianese and Damiano Barabino. We can only guess, but definitely not understand fully, what their families are going through at the moment. For what it's worth, all we can do now is be with them, and all the rescuers, in spirit.
