The North Face Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc
The North Face®/ Alo Belluscio
Despite intense rain and high winds last weekend the of the The North Face® Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc confirmed itself as being one of the most important mountain running races in the world. So much so that the 2012 edition not only celebrated its 10th anniversary, it also beat all previous records: 73 nations were represented by almost 6000 competitors who registered for the four different competitions.

The adverse weather forced the organisers to change the race course of above all the "queen" event, namely the UTMB which consequently only took place on French territory instead of crossing Italy and Switzerland for the usual trip around Mont Blanc. These 103km and 6000m of positive altitude change were won by England's extraordinary Lizzy Hawker - the 36-year-old had now won a record fifth time after victories in 2005, 2008, 2010 and 2011) and by France's François D’Haene. In the other competitions it's worth noting that Dawa Sherpa won the TDS 9 years after his historic win of the first UTMB, and the victories of "newcomers" Tofol Castaner from Spain and Ellie Greenwood from Scotland in the classic Courmayeur - Champex - Chamonix race.
