Rock Climbing Marathon – San Vito lo Capo, Sicily

14.10.2009 by Matteo Giglio

The first international climbing meeting at San Vito lo Capo in Sicily took place from 9 - 11 October

The intent of the organisers was to promote the relatively unknown rock climbing potential in Sicily, and for the occasion the picturesque area on the extreme NW tip of the island, known as San Vito lo Capo, was chosen. This famous summer holiday resort also offers countless possibilities for sport climbing and multi-pitch climbing.

Thanks to the immense work of the organisers, spearheaded by Massimo Cappuccio, Peppe Gallo (authors of the rock climbing guide “Di roccia e di sole”, ed. Versante Sud), Daniele Arena & Co, Italian and international climbers managed to have fun on the beautiful rocks immersed in the typical Mediterranean setting. Sun, sea, warm temperatures, typical Mediterranean smells all helped create a context where climbing was certainly an excellent pretext to rest and relax.

To ensure that the meeting at San Vito was even more interesting a sort of "competition" was organised which was comprised of two formulas: an 8 hour climbing marathon on routes from 6a to 8b and an 4 hour half marathon on routes up to 6b. The competition was for climbing teams (no distinction between men and women): both climbers had to climb the same route and points were awarded depending on the grad of the route, the style of ascent (redpoint, resting) with a bonus if the route was climbed on-sight by both climbers. Superfluous to say that those who climbed fastest received most points, quantity proved more important than quality... as did the homogenous nature of the team.

The first edition of the San Vito Rock Climbing Marathon was won by Matteo Gambaro - Marco Nescatelli, followed by Mauro Calibani - Guido Jafelice. Third place went to Matteo Giglio - Angelika Rainer. Over 150 climbers took part in the meeting, including some of Italy's finest such as Gambaro, Nescatelli, Calibani, Rainer, Alberto Gnerro, Marzio Nardi, Alessandro Catalano, Elena Chiappa, Anna Torretta, Marco Ballerini, Norberto Riva and many others. As well as Scott Titt who bolted all the routes at the crag at Salinella Camping where the marathon took place.
