| It was no secret: the Huber brothers had their eyes and hearts set on El Capitan's Zodiac. And after working the route intensively earlier this summer (and setting a record speed ascent) Alex und Thomas Huber have now finally freed Yoemite's mythical 16 pitch route. First climbed in 1972 by Chris Porter and graded A2 5.7, the Huber's topped out on 9 October after three days on the wall. Although the grade is still unknown, it is most probably in the upper 5.13 range. In freeing the Zodiac the Huber's have, yet again added their name to Yosemite's history books. Other significant free ascents include: Salathe Wall 5.13b (1995) Freerider 5.13a (1998) El Nino 5.13c (1998) Golden Gate 5.13b (2000) El Corazon 5.13b (2001) |
