The small and solitary Val Pramper is situated to the east of the more famous Valzoldana, which leads up to the Pelmo and Civetta. The icefalls in Val Pramper are situated on the lower walls of the Spiz di Mezdì.
The icefalls described in this article are medium to hard and obviously require, apart from technical ability, experience and good judgement when assessing the quality of the ice.
The isolation, silence and beauty of the valley make the long walk-in more than worthwhile.
If coming from the south, follow the A27 motorway to its end. Follow signs for Cortina to Longarone and turn left here for the Valzoldana.
Drive to Forno di Zoldo and turn off left for Pralongo (immediately before leaving the town, next to the church). At the first hairpin turn a road on the right leads up the Val Pramper (signposted Rifugio Sommariva). This road is usually snowed in and icy; park the car here and walk from here.
If coming from the north, drive through the Dolomites over the various mountain passes to reach Forno di Zoldo.
Continue up the road either on foot or with skis (often indispensable) following signs for Rifugio Sommariva. Allow at least an hour for the walk-in; this may vary depending on the sector and the snow conditions.
Be careful not to mistakenly follow the cross-country piste in the first section.
