Whats in store for this third IWC? 2000 was hallmarked by the novelty factor, by highly motivated athletes having fun, almost forming a clan. In 2001 this fun and family atmosphere prevailed to some extent, but a greater competitive spirit took hold. Bouldering established itself and the competition environment clearly distinguished itself from ice climbing outdoors, clearly laying the foundations for a new discipline. In 2002 many issues previously ignored will have to be confronted, first and foremost the climbing structures themselves. At present these are difficult to construct, expensive and, just like the ice that covers them, fickle. No doubt there will be some development here.
And what about the athletes? Word has it that Will Gadd will be back. Winner of the first edition in 2000 and without a doubt one of the best ice climbers around, the Canadian will be one to watch out for. As will Mauro 'Bubu' Bole, who has confirmed his participation for this season. One of competitions main protagonists, he'll give his all both during the competition and in the parties afterwards.
