| Problems and rules: Local ice climbers and Forest and Hunting Administration officials have signed an agreement by which ice climbing is permitted only after the 1st of January, to respect the hunting season. Ice climbing is forbidden before the 1st of January. After this date no restrictions apply. After heavy snowfall the "Malta - Hochalmstraße" becomes impassable. If this is the case the only viable option is to continue on skis. Depending on where you go, the approach time may vary between 1-2 hours, or somewhat more! Due to the request of the landowner there are no signs that lead through the forest to the climbs. Please respect this and the countryside. Descend directly from the top of the icefalls via fixed anchors or trees. The area above the falls is home to many species and should not be disturbed. The Maltatal is part of the "National Park Hohe Tauern". Please behave accordingly. Park in such a way that the Forest Service can pass. Its vehicles are often much wider than a normal car. Snow chains are highly recommended. |
